Areas of Practice

Defense of CU Students

University of Colorado students who are charged with a criminal offense face additional issues and challenges beyond those found in the criminal justice system. In addition to any sentence imposed by a court, CU students will face the prospect of a hearing and the imposition of sanctions from Judicial Affairs, which can have long-range consequences. A criminal arrest can potentially result in an eviction from a student's rental housing. Out of state residency and a student's age can also affect the criminal proceedings. Because of these unique issues, Bruce has devoted himself to educating and protecting the rights of CU students in criminal defense and University administrative proceedings. Beginning with his award in law school for outstanding dedication to the CU Legal Aid and Defender Program, Bruce has continued to not only provide superior legal representation to CU students charged with criminal offenses for over 17 years, but has actively been an advocate for student interests and issues.

While other defense attorneys may claim to know and understand the unique perspective of a college student, Bruce has been directly involved in CU Student Affairs. Bruce has been the Legal Advisor to CU's Off-Campus Student Services for the past five years where he advises and educates students regarding State offenses and Boulder Municipal violations, as well as legal issues regarding alcohol abuse and rental housing issues. Bruce has also served on various committees through the City of Boulder, addressing student issues, including the Subcommittee on Alcohol Policies and Regulations, the Nuisance Abatement focus group reviewing student interaction with permanent neighbors, and the CU/City Task Force. In addition, Bruce has represented CU student interests at inter-collegiate seminars involving CSU, UNC, and several Universities across the country, addressing the legal issues facing college students living off-campus. Bruce is the chairman and founding member of the CU Landlord/Tenant Advisory Board, which is leading the nation in addressing these same issues from the unique perspective of a bi-partisan non-political organization.

When a college student has been charged with a criminal offense, you not only need a great attorney, you need someone who has the understanding and knowledge to deal with the emotional, psychological, and administrative consequences. Bruce is not only is a top-notch criminal defense attorney, but also has the experience and background to bring a unique and positive perspective and insight into the defense of CU students. If you have any questions about how a criminal offense will effect CU enrollment and participation, financial concerns, rental housing, or other college issues, give Bruce a call now.

Consultation Program

DUI/Misdemeanor Consultation Program

While our primary objective is to provide effective representation in your case, we also understand the human side of criminal defense, including financial constraints. As a result, we have developed a program specifically for DUI and misdemeanor cases in which we are able to review a case and educate our client so that he or she can effectively represent themselves in a disposition of the charges against them, thereby saving potentially thousands of dollars in legal fees. Of course, this program is not for everyone and, for those clients who wish to retain our services as legal counsel, we offer both reasonable hourly-based fee schedules or, if you are more comfortable with a flat fee, we can do that, too.

Personal Injury

In addition to criminal defense, Bruce has been representing clients injured in auto, bicycle, slip-and-fall, and other types of accidents. In this capacity, Bruce is proud to be "Of Counsel" to Cameron W. Tyler and Associates, PC.
